Close Call

Today as I was returning from Daughter's I had quite a scare. I was on one of those stretches of highway between Kingman and Wickenburg where the road keeps going from two lane to four lane and  is winding and hilly.. I was approaching a slow car in my lane and started to change into the left lane to pass.

I didn't think any other cars were near me. I was listening to a Kenny Chesney's "Hemingway's Whiskey" and singing along, not really paying attention to my driving. As I started to pull left, I looked to that side and realized another car was right beside me--within inches of the driver's side... I swerved back into the right lane but over corrected and the car tilted and rocked back and forth. The GPS unit went sliding across my dash and I just knew I was going to roll.

Then I felt a gentle nudge. It was a definite uprighting and steadying of the car. I don't know whether there was a car coming behind me that saw my near wreck or not. I sort of don't remember the second or two following the incident.

When I could pull off the road safely, I stopped, got out and looked at the left side of my car to see if there were any scrapes. That's how close I felt I had come. There was nothing to show for this indiscretion except my shaking.

I try hard to be a safe driver, but I have a bad habit of pulling into the left lane and not seeing cars in my blind spot. I've been turning and looking over my shoulder since coming to Arizona because there's so much more traffic here. Today I forgot and just made a sudden lane change thinking I was no where around another car.

I didn't tell Daughter or husband. I don't want them yelling at me. They know I'm a little unstable in my driving skills.  I just don't really want to admit my idiocy.

However I read a blog when I got home about how life can change in a split second. How one moment's action can change a life forever, often tragically. I'm so glad this wasn't such a situation. I honestly am still shaken by this. Not because it ended badly, but just because it could have.

I hope I learned from this and drive more carefully in the future. I truly do attempt to drive safely. I used to get sleepy when I drove down to Las Vegas from Idaho and I'd find myself hitting the rumble strips and waking from a sudden doze off. I try not to drive tired now and I honestly do make every effort to obey the law. I almost always set cruise so I'm not speeding, I am a fanatic about not texting while I drive or not driving distracted. This was just one of those caught-off-guard moments.

One of the comments on the blog I mentioned had cited this quote that someone sent after her husband died: "Faith is believing today in the light that doesn't come until tomorrow."

I need to remember to try my best to appreciate every moment of every day and not take any for granted. I am thankful for being spared from my own careless error. I just shudder to think what might have happened. I hope to be smarter in my choices and more grateful for what I have.

I don't know why I'm blogging about this, but I just felt as though I was being reminded by the blog I read that I was blessed not to have wrecked. It kind of knocked me upside the head and awoke me to life's beauty and how fragile it is. Maybe it will help someone else to not drift into tragedy.

Somehow I missed this post yesterday, so here I am in my jammies looking to see if Jo has posted something funny to start my day off.

Not the case. She SCARED me (and herself) soooo much!

Oh, dear. That was truly a close call and I'm deeply happy that you made it through that incident unharmed. Like you, I try to pay attention and sometimes think I'm the 'old poop' on the road that follows the speed limits and all the other rules of the road. But one nano-second is all it takes, huh?

I'm headed out today to shop about an hour away ~ on a road that can be full of nut cases from the flatlands who love to speed ~ so I will be EXTRA cautious as I drive there AND will keep you on my dashboard.

Sometimes it takes a nudge...thanks for sharing.

Sending you a LARGE HUG...

This was a good piece of writing Jo. It was intense and telling. I'm grateful you came through without a crash and appreciate your insights.

Hey, for some reason, this post didn't come up until just now. I think I need to hug you real bad. The Lord does "nudge" us. I'm grateful to Him for keeping you upright. Also, that's it! No more driving to Vegas, you are DONE! You hear me?? Done!!! I love you all in one piece.

I have "bad driving days" on occasion, and this sounds just like something I'd do on one of those days. In any case, I'm glad you're okay... and please remember to do plenty of head checks before you change lanes. :)

I think it's a great post. This last time I drove up to TF, I got so dang sleepy it was torture. When I knew I was in trouble a red car passed me on the left and I was so close to him it was scary. The blind spot on cars is terrible and I have no idea why Detroit has not fixed this little thing. But get yourself some blind spot mirrors and they help a little bit. The freeways in California is where it's so hard to see with that blind spot.

I'm interested in Holly's comment about the post just coming up. I posted last night and it still has not updated. I may have to kill this blog and start over fresh. But everybody has to follow me if I do that. I'm just tired of all these posting problems I've been having.

Thank God you are ok. Sounds to me like that gentle nudge was your angel stepping in to make sure things turned out ok for you.

I was once going through an intersection in Boston when a car to my right ran the red light. Nothing I could do ... she was coming up fast and into my passenger side door where my son was sitting. Then suddenly she stopped abruptly. When we emerged from our cars, both shaken, we could not believe that there was not room between our cars to slide a piece of paper. There was absolutely no damage and the other driver said she had not even slammed on her brakes -- her car just stopped! Think she squished my angel that day. God is good!

Blessings, Ann

It's good to have these remindders..and maybe that "gentle nudge" was ...you know...your angels. I believe. Mine is named Michael..yep, that one..the archangel Michael..I once had an "Angel whisper-er" tell me that..but somehow, I always knew..I am SOOOOO glad you safe!!

HI JO!!
OH I AM SOOO GLAD you are OK!!
I hate that stretch of road, it is called suicide highway and it used to be lined with crosses but when they started widening it, they took them all down. My daughter's in laws live in Kingman and they would really like her to drive there often, but WE HATE THAT road. We actually really prefer to fly to Vegas because of this unsafe road, glad the DAM is done too!!
that was always a mess.GOD was with you in that car today, you know that right????Praise him for keeping you safe today, I know I will tell him Thanks for that .
Hugs,.

Oh my! I am so glad you are okay. I have done the same thing before and it is definitely one of those "scare the pee out of me" moments.

I am trying to get used to the blind spots in my new car. The one on the left side is almost impossible to see. Much harder than in the 'rolling wreck'. I am sure I will be reminded of your experience while I am driving and try to watch more closely.

Glad you made it home safe!

Holy crap! I am thinking you are a very watched over, and protected woman. I think you know where that nudge came from. Glad you are safe!
