The grandchildren are already well into their Christmas gift list. It isn't even Thanksgiving yet. You know, the season when we show appreciation for our bounty and the goodness we have been granted.
Also note that I live with the most "unholiday" husband ever created. He's a sweet, kind man. Really he is, but he doesn't get holidays. He's opposed to traditions and hates pumpkin pie. How can a person not like pumpkin pie? (Personally I like mince meat pie and NO ONE else but my mother ever likes that, so what do I know.)
Rick didn't even have a stocking when he was a boy. He was essentially raised by wolves though he turned out remarkably kind, just not terribly festive. The lupine community turns their tails on tinsel.
So when the list arrives with trains, video games, and devices I don't even recognize, the Rickster mutters, "Just send them money! We're not struggling to buy that crap."
We've been invited and then uninvited to the daughter's for Thanksgiving. It's a long story, but suffice it to say that we will be dining at home and we will have barbequed ribs and no pumpkin pie.
I'm already exhausted from trying to mediate the joy of the holidays. In the meantime I'm putting up more twinkle lights. (If you know what movie that's from, you are my friend for life.)
The check is in the mail. I'll decorate and sing caroles but I'll be doing it alone again. I can't blame him entirely. I am the one who hates Christmas Day. It's the most depressing day of the year to me.
We have a disfunctional holiday home, for sure. No wonder our daughter compensates by over-buying and over-celebrating. She's from mixed parentage--one lobo and one loon. Who wouldn't be confused!

I don't like Christmas either. It really does depress me. I've never had the fun Hallmark Christmas' that everybody else has. Do they even exist? Probably not. My dad hated Christmas when I was a child; my husband hated Christmas the whole time I was married to him. And now the kids are gone and do their own thing and I'm alone with Hank. Sucks! Big time. I'm going to climb Peralta trailhead on T-day. Wanna go? I refuse to mope around and I'm not going to go to anyone else's house this year. That really doesn't delight me that much to spend the day in some other familie's joy. Yuk!!!
This post proves that you are truly back!!!!
I also overcompensated every holiday due to my youth. Now everyone is used to it and I'm ready to scale back.
Since writing off the majority of my extended family, sibs and all, the holidays are a peaceful celebration :)
May the bridges I burn light my way.
P,S. it must be in a mans genetic makeup to dislike holidays? Mine never has.
I'm glad you got your blog fixed. I couldn't read that tiny little font it had switched to.
I love the whole Christmas season - the music and the tv specials and the buying and wrapping of gifts for those I love the most in all the world. Its a tradition handed down from my parents, who loved Christmas and a husband who loves spoiling his family. We don't overdo on the gifts - can't afford to - but it doesn't dampen our enjoyment of the season. I even love Christmas snow!
Each to his own though. I know you enjoy decorating for the different seasons. What will your Christmas decoration theme be this year?
