During our blog buddies get together Friday, Sheryl and Holly recommended that I visit the fine city of Prescott. I've been very few places in Arizona so Rick and I packed up our shih tzu Lola, a cooler of Diet Coke and a few snacks and headed out. Quite a big adventure for us.
I took my camera but of course shot no pictures. (The same happened at the lunch Friday. Go to Holly's blog to see the picture and hear about the fun we had.) I don't ever take good photos and I like to blame it on my cheap camera. So let's all just imagine that I took pictures. Shall we?
The reason for the title of this blog "press cut" is to show the difference between how we (foreigners from Idaho) and they (Arizonans) say the name Prescott. In Idaho we seem to believe that Prescott is pronounced "press cot," like a camping bed or the cot in apricot. Do you get that? But here in the south, they say "press cut" as in "cut to the chase." That's Arizonan talk, y'all.
(And they tell me that instead of "tem pea " with accent on the tem as I had always heard, Tempe is pronounced "tem PEA" accent on the pe. So now I feel like I've just massacred the entire English pronunciation key. And my brain hurts.)
The main thing is I have no visual evidence of our journey. Suffice it to say a lovely time was had by all. The landscape looked more like Idaho land than the desert we're living in. There were pine trees, cedars, and something resembling sagebrush. People in Prescott are very friendly. (It's called "every one's home town" for a good reason.) We ate lunch at a liquor store--really. It's a liquor store with a sandwich/pizza restaurant on the side. The food was most tasty and everyone chatted and told us about sights we might like around the state. We visited the historic down town. Saw thrift shops, art galleries and all form of souvenir shops. Lola liked the cooler weather. It was a chilly 50 degrees. (We're all so wimpy now from living in the hubs of hell.)
We came home through Congress--the scenic route. We even got to see three deer bound across the road right up a steep canyon. I enjoyed the winding road down the mountain. (Sorry, Sheryl, I had no idea where to find your abode. I was going to ask at the fire station, but I thought that might be embarrassing. Next time.)
The only problems encountered were that Lola got a thorn in her paw while peeing and a tire pressure warning light came on in my car on the final leg of our trip. (I just give up on that dang car. I don't want to talk about it.)
But our outing was most enjoyable. Then we watched Kyle win the Nationwide race, Arizona lose to UConn in the NCAA "elite 8," and went to bed at 8:30 because we were exhausted from our trek.
I'm sure that description is better than any darned ol' pictures I could have shot. Who said, "A picture's worth a thousand words" any way? I'm sure he/she had a better camera than I do.

Prescott is a fun place to go. Next time you hit there, take the back road and go up to Jerome. Now that's a fun ghost town.
We just love Prescott. For lots of fun, plan to go and stay over the 4th of July. It's a real old-fashioned American Fourth and families are just out enjoying the good time. Downtown reminds us both of New England -- take a walk down some of the side streets and view the lovely old homes.
waaa...I wish I had known...Larry and I were up there for the weekend!..next time for sure and can't wait until you guys get back to Congress!
yeah..but..Utahans say things oddly too..like Hurrikin (Hurricane) and let's not forget Tooele...Too-will-ah
Hahhahaha! Guess everywhere has their funny sounding names...
I cannot believe you went! So proud of you. Did you do the whole town square thing? Glad you had fun. As your official travel agent, you are going to Flagstaff next. Or Christopher Creek, I'll let you choose.
My husband is totally confused by the way we natives say things too! Well, I'm especially ruined because I was born and learned how to talk in Utah, then was raised here. There's no hope for me. ;)
Or you could travel to my hometown of Snowflake. Although that might be more excitement than you could stand.
It kind of drives me a little crazy how people say "Presskit" instead of "Press cot." So I totally agree. And Tooele in Utah is just classic. So funny. Who in the heck came up with that one? I love Zyzzx Road in California, too. You see it on on the freeway on the way to San Diego.
HI!!!
I HAVE NOT forgotten you!!!
SOOOO SORRY!!!
that 8 days away, 3 days of Photographing all the cute kiddos in and around here with MY EASTER BABY CHICKS, I am 11 days behind in work, like ironing(remember I love to iron), I have not organized or Had the TAXES done yet, hubby keeps reminding me that 4-15 is right around the corner, he thinks I might forget, NOT gonna happen as we USUALLY get $$$ back!!!
So now to catch up on all the blogs!!!
I am nearly an AZ native...4 months shy of that....And I call it PRESS-COT all one word!!
And I say TEMPEEEEE, so I got half right I guess!!!PressCUT sounds hickish to me!!!
SO sorry Northern Az people!!
Have a Great day
it is BEAUTIFUL up there though!!!

jamie
We lived in Cottonwood 25 years ago and I can remember visiting Press-cott. I can imagine that whole N. Arizona area greatly changed from back when we lived there! Sounds like a fun day trip!
I love Prescott, but my favorite place is Jerome...love a good ghost town. Prescott twice a year has a fabulous outdoor antique show around the square. I used to go to that with a girlfriend, Biz...we have lost touch with each other, would love to reunite. She was a doll. So glad you enjoyed Prescott, hope you had lunch at the local cafe...great diner type meals. Sea Witch
haha I think the way I pronounce it it sounds like pres-scott
