About a year ago I posted about our security alarm. It beeped uncontrollably, you might remember, and drove me to distraction. Rick and I dismantled the alarm as well as we could, ripping out wires and unfastening connectors.
So today when I started hearing that dang beep, beep again, I pushed the * 2 buttons as we have done in the past thinking it would stop. Each time I sat back down, I was mocked by the beep again. As a last ditch effort, I found my tiny screwdriver, yanked off the front of the control that we hadn't been able to remove before and took four wires off a little mother board which is now lying on the dining room table.
Beep! Beep! What the heck? I kept walking around the house trying to find out where it came from. Finally, I went into the hall by the laundry room, crawled on a chair where I was greeted by the sassy beep, beep. The smoke alarm. I managed to take out the 9-volt battery, but of course we didn't have any replacements. (Those little buggers are kind of pricey I found out even at Sam's Club.)
I bought the new batteries, put in one, and the cacophony stopped. However, now I have this mess of wires sticking out of the alarm pad by the front door. Rick can deal with that when he gets home. I've done all the damage I can do for one day. And I'd better not hear that unpleasant beep any more today.
I also managed to finish Pride and Prejudice in between the alarm surgery. The last half was much better than the first part. It was just one of those books that you had to concentrate on. I couldn't just pop in and out of it at will. I don't know how couples ever got together in that era. It took Darcy and Elizabeth f-o-r-e-v-e-r to figure out they loved each other. And there wasn't even a kiss, was there? Or did I skim over that part. I don't think so.
I am going to start Fatal Error now. I need something to do while I hunker down and try to stay warm. The temperatures are the lowest they've been here in this part of the desert for a couple of decades or more. It's odd that 29 in Arizona seems as cold as zero did in Idaho. Why is that? But it's a dry cold...

I read Pride & Prejudice this past year also and I agree. It was hard to concentrate on and the last half was better than the first. And I thought the same thing, they didn't even kiss!
You dismantle the alarm system and some 911 person didn't come to your aid?
It's in the middle of the dining room? Oh my goodness that's hilarious.
I was waiting for you to discover it was only some child's toy or something under the couch. THAT would have been funny.
I'm trying really hard to feel sorrow or pity or some other similar emotion about your temps there in AZ...............but I'm just not feeling it.
AS WE TYPE, I have a smoke detector missing his 9 volt!!Dtrives me nuts too!!But better then it going off at 3 a.am.!!!
You are a brave soul to take something apart!!!
Glad you finished the book!!!
I once was asked which character I was from that book???
hugs,
jamie
You're right, you definitely can't hop in and out of P&P. It's one of those books I feel like you HAVE to read, though.
Stay warm. Dang this cold!
I had a feeling it was a smoke detector. I can't tell you how often that has happened to me.
I have never read P&P. It is on my 'to be read' list but it's never made it to the top.
I'm glad you finished it and liked it!!! This winter has just been crazy - world wide! Stay warm!!!!
Those irritating beeping noises get under my skin too! Hugs!
I've never read that book. One of these days. Yesterday it was so cold I had a fire going all day long (I figured I burned 20 bucks) and never got out of my pj's. Read all day.
I HATE that I have to buy logs to burn!
It's a dry cold....now that's funny. I have 3 smoke alarms all going down the same hallway, I KNOW!!!! Crazy, I tell ya. Anyway, when one goes off I can never tell which one it is so I replace the batteries in all three.
Even a little bit colder up here in Congress..we are at 3,000 ft elevation. I even had to put on a pair of jeans and sweatshirt...hate that! Those older books are hard to read..you do have to concentrate and that is hard for me nowadays...I will get a list togethr of some fav reads ...I know you can get them at the library...yes, even in Surprise!
It is probably the cold dry that is the hardest! I love the story of the beep beep! So glad to know I'm not the only one that would be annoyed by that :) When I moved home from college all my stuff got packed away in my parents basement, along with my fire alarm. When the battery started dying we couldn't get to it so we had to listen to it beep for oh goodness... weeks.
Those dang smoke alarms. Our are all hooked together so if one goes off all of them go off...LOUDLY - Annoying!
Enjoy your book!
And as far as the weather goes our bodies adjust so 29 in AZ probably does feel like 0 in Idaho!!
Stay warm chickie!
I haven't read Pride and Prejudice, but I really enjoyed the made-for-TV mini series with Colin Firth in it. Wowee, is he cuuuuuuute!
