Eighties in the Shade...

No, not the 80's like the decade (though I was definitely present for them.) I sat outside this morning in the shade and the temperature was 80 and it was delightful. I finished reading Sarah's Key while basking in the protection of the patio cover. That is one good book. I didn't think I'd like it. Thought it would be depressing and you know I can't go there...But it was well written and tied together. So many books I read lately are just all over the place with story line and characters. They never end the way I want them to and they're too abstract and artsy. This Holocaust novel did not darken my spirit. I learned from the history. I was thoroughly engaged with the characters. I felt as if I wanted to meet Julia and Zoe and Sarah herself. (Let me stop my English teacherish ramblings now...)

I planted some marigolds, fertilized my palms and citrus, and planted sunflower and zinnia seeds. I'm quite the gardener in the early stages of the process here in the land of hotness. Soon the heat will have killed and baked away all juices from anything living. Rick says that's why such a high percentage of Arizonans are cranky. He thinks they have suffered sun stroke. (Post all nasty comments to Rickster in care of justcallmejo.)

So I'm including some of my truly heinous photos to demonstrate my handiwork. My daughter called while I was out planting. I told her "we" were outside planting.

"Who's we?" she asked. "I thought Rick was at work." (She's always called her dad "Rick." I think it's cute. Not everyone does. Some think it's weird. Well la tee dah, folks...)  I didn't even think when I said "we." The dogs and I were out planting. We're buddies. Just us girls out in the lovely morning air. We had a nice outing. We're good like that.
This cactus was once just the bottom triangle. It broke off another bigger one. Look how he's grown. I'm so proud.

Some cheery flowers still alive after three weeks. These are keepers.

New hibiscus planted to replace those lost in the big frost of 2011.
Tomatoes and marigolds. Keep your fingers crossed.

I just replaced my frozen hibiscus with a rose bush. I've never tried to grow roses before. I'm going to need more than luck. Your pool looks delicious.

Throwing my suit in the Jeep, I'll be over in a minute! That looks wonderful. Love the flowers, mine are still alive but barely hanging on. I need help. Can your dog come over?

80 degrees?! We got up to 61 yesterday...it does feel like Spring today, knowing Utah, we just might get another snow storm or two! Good luck with the flowers! :D

I pretty much just want to jump in your pool with you!

Can you believe it is 70 something here today? It feels like 100 after our cold winter.

Hey! Your girlie-girl pup and my Boy-ly-boy (?) Braxton would make a fine looking pair, doncha say?!

Yep..I remember spring in Arizona..the smell of orange blossoms so heavy..the sun soo warming on the back..then..like an blink of the eye later..it's 106 degrees and no one is seen outdoors! And, I agree with the Rickster...that weather makes everything dry and cranky!

No, seniors aren't cranky cuz they're hot.
I'm cranky cuz it's freezing!!!!!

I LOVE that picture of you in the pool. I promise if I come and sit in it I would behave and never be cranky!

The dog looks like he's having a good time too.

Planting for me is about 2 months away.

I looove hibiscus. It always strikes me as funny that I live somewhere that plants like that and my bird of paradise can survive. They wouldn't stand a chance in Twinky Flats!

OK, OK. I have a challenge. Who else had a mind pic of lots-of-cream-being-applied-to-inside-of-hands, when they read ... "fertilized my palms"?

I know. No one! And it does sound totally weird even to me, when I repeat it. But...... I did. I got a mind pic of putting "cream and gloves" on for a while, like years ago.

OK! So I'm older than anyone else here! No one else remembers doing that! OK! OK! Cut the ol' gal some slack, hu?
